Visiting surgeon taps BayCare Clinic’s orthopedic expertise

Wed, Jul 26, 2017

Dr. Joaquin Pandanan, is poised to oversee the orthopedics department at De La Salle University Medical Center in Dasmarinas, a Phillippine city roughly the size of Milwaukee. Before doing so, he needs a little help from his friends.

Those friends include Drs. Robert Limoni and Shawn Hennigan, who are orthopedic surgeons with BayCare Clinic in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Pandanan, who specializes in arthroplasty – the surgical reconstruction or repair of a joint – recently traveled from the Philippines to observe procedures and receive instruction on some of the latest techniques in orthopedic surgery. He shadowed orthopedics experts in Florida, Arkansas and Michigan before visiting Limoni and Hennigan at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay.

“I came for observation of things the Americans are doing. What are the latest updates? What are these doctors doing? I’m observing people who are doing … medicine like Dr. Hennigan and Dr. Limoni,” Pandanan says. He’s the training officer at De La Salle University Medical Center.

“My goal actually is to observe these arthroscopy guys doing medicine,” he says. “They’ve really helped me a lot. They taught me everything from the basics to the tips and tricks that you don’t see in a book. It really means a lot to me.”

Over the course of two days, Pandanan observed several orthopedic surgical procedures and received instruction from Limoni and Hennigan.

It was an “impressive” experience, Pandanan says.

“Dr. Hennigan really started from the beginning … he really amazed me. I learned a lot from him. He was an instructor. Previous doctors (he visited), they work so very fast, I got so confused. Here, he showed me everything from the positioning and everything. It orients me.”

Pandanan, who has also traveled to Germany for observation and training, plans to add to his repertoire the techniques and procedures learned on his U.S. trip, with the blessing of his hospital organization.

“Yeah, hopefully I’ll do that and be able to share with my colleagues back in the Philippines,” he says. “They’ll be very happy to have me back to show them what I’ve been doing in the States.”

Although his Green Bay visit was brief, Pandanan plans to make lasting friendships.

“It’s good to be able to get in touch with them if I have some difficult cases back in our home, then maybe I can ask for some help and that’s what we usually do when we get out of town for some training,” he says. “They’re happy to share and happy to give their advice on what to do with my cases.”
