Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic offers new pain block
Wed, Sep 27, 2017
Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic, a leader in innovative care, is the first orthopedic group in Wisconsin to offer iovera°, a minimally invasive treatment that uses intense cold to reduce or eliminate pain, to knee replacement surgery patients.
iovera° is an FDA-cleared system using precise, controlled doses of cold as a nerve block. Treatments are delivered through a portable, handheld probe. Treatments are done before surgery to provide pain relief and ease recovery after surgery.
iovera° treatments use cryoneurolysis, applying targeted cold to a peripheral nerve and preventing the nerve from sending pain signals. There is no damage to surrounding tissue. Most patients can resume normal, non-strenuous activities the same day.
The cold’s effect on the nerve is immediate but temporary. It provides pain relief until the nerve regenerates and functions normally. Because iovera° doesn’t involve drugs or pharmaceuticals, it offers an alternative to opioids.
“In just a short time, we’ve seen how iovera° helps our knee surgery patients greatly improve their recovery. It’s exciting to be the first in the state to offer this treatment,” says Dr. Robert Limoni, an orthopedic surgeon with Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
iovera° is being offered by Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic providers in Green Bay and Manitowoc. For more information, call 877-229-2273.
iovera° is a registered trademark of Myoscience.
