Options available for cartilage loss

Fri, Nov 17, 2017

Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic offers several treatment options to replace lost cartilage in your knee.

Depending on the size and location of the damage or tear in your cartilage, remedies can include nonsurgical treatment, cartilage transplant, or having knee cartilage cultured in a lab to create new cells to place into the knee joint.

“Today, given our understanding of the mechanics of the knee, we realize the importance of cartilage preservation as well as cartilage restoration when necessary in active patients,” Dr. Carl A. DiRaimondo, an orthopedic surgeon with Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic in Manitowoc said.

Success rates for most cartilage restoration procedures are up to 90 percent after a decade of follow-up visits, DiRaimondo says.
