New medical device aids safer treatment of aneurysms

That’s why he supports use of the Pipeline Flex Embolization Device with Shield Technology, which allows for safer treatment of aneurysms.
Darkhabani was the first specialist in Wisconsin to use the device. It was approved for use in April 2021. He has successfully employed it several times.
“Essentially, it’s an improved device that helps divert blood flow away from a brain aneurysm which is what you want when trying to fix an aneurysm,” he says.
An aneurysm is a weak area of a blood vessel that causes bulging or ballooning of the vessel wall. They’re life-threatening if they burst.
The Pipeline Flex Embolization Device with Shield Technology features a braided cylindrical mesh tube that is implanted across the base or neck of the aneurysm. The device cuts off blood flow into the aneurysm.
The pipeline itself is not new but the addition of the shield technology is, Darkhabani says.
“It’s exciting to consistently remain at or very near the forefront of technologies that impact aneurysm treatment such as the Pipeline Flex Embolization Device with Shield Technology,” he says. “It’s another illustration of how we strive to enhance our aneurysm treatments and procedures with the goal of providing increasingly positive outcomes for our patients.
“It’s a game changer. It’s designed for safer delivery through difficult anatomy and is much safer for patients in the post-procedure phase.”
While most brain aneurysms do not burst, ruptures occur in about 40,000 people each year in the United States. Darkhabani says he’d like to see that number reduced.
“In some cases, avoiding an aneurysm or aneurysm rupture comes down to lifestyle changes and preventative measures,” he says. “That includes not smoking or quitting if you are a smoker, controlling high blood pressure and undergoing early, routine screenings if you are at risk or have a family history of aneurysms.”
