Luehmann is a breast surgeon with Aurora BayCare General & Vascular Surgery. She’s Green Bay’s only fellowship trained breast surgeon. Fellowship training means she’s at the leading-edge when it comes to providing area patients information and treatment options during their breast cancer journey.
Her patients benefit “immensely” from her fellowship training, she says.
“It’s important to be fellowship trained because you have specialized training in more up-to-date surgical techniques for different types of breast cancer surgery that’s available,” Luehmann says. “We pay special attention to how the breast cancer surgery is going to fit into the overall treatment plan.”
Luehmann is one of a small percentage of surgeons that have undergone fellowship training to further strengthen their ability to provide superior breast cancer and breast disease care.
She is supported by a specialized comprehensive breast services team including disciplines such as radiology, oncology, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, genetics, primary care, physical therapy and more.
“With comprehensive cancer care, the entire treatment team works together to care for each patient,” Luehmann says. “With us, there’s so much communication and teamwork going on behind the scenes for each patient, even before they come into the clinic … it allows us to be thorough in our approach, but also ensures that everything is as personalized and as individualized as it can be for each patient.”
That dynamic further illustrates the importance of a fellowship trained breast specialist, according to the American Society of Breast Surgeons in its official statement, “What is a Breast Surgeon?”
“Within the multidisciplinary breast care team, the surgeon has emerged as an integral member of the team,” says the American Society of Breast Surgeons in its official statement, “What is a Breast Surgeon?” “A special kind of surgeon is needed to meet the emotional needs of the breast cancer patient, as well as a desire to master the technical skills required to perform the highest quality surgery.”
And who is that special kind of surgeon? The fellowship trained surgeon, Luehmann says.
“All breast cancers are not alike and there are a lot of nuanced decisions that go into how the treatment is approached,” she says. “Having that extra training really lets patients have the most cutting-edge information and treatment. They can be assured they are getting the care they need and deserve.”
