Meet Dr. Timothy Kennedy, urologist
Tue, Aug 18, 2020
Most teenagers are hanging out with friends, playing their favorite sport or planning the next big party. Not the case for a young Timothy Kennedy.
As a teenager, Kennedy, now a urological surgeon with Aurora BayCare Medical Center, already was satisfying his curiosity about the medical field. He worked after school as an orderly and a short order cook at a county hospital in Mason City, Iowa.
He also occasionally joined his father, a urologist, in the operating room.
“At 15, 16 years of age, my father would have interesting cases and would have me scrub in and pull retractors, like a medical student,” Kennedy says. “I got indoctrinated early as a young teenager.”
However, Kennedy never planned to become a urologist like his dad.
“I essentially tried doing everything I could to avoid being a urologist because I thought I was tainted,” he says. “I looked at all kinds of other specialties, but ultimately decided that I wanted to do something procedural rather than internal medicine. In fact, I probably would have been a gynecologic oncology surgeon but at that point there were no fellowships in gyn onc. So if you really wanted to be a gyn onc back in the 1970s and 1980s, you trained as an OB-GYN. And then as your patient population got older, you started doing more cancer work and less OB. But that was not very appealing, so I looked at a bunch of other specialties.”
Ultimately, Kennedy pursued a career as a urologist. It’s a medical specialization that offers great variety, he says.
“There’s old people and young people,” he says. “I mean, I’ve had clinic days where my youngest patient was 5 days old and my oldest patient was 98. So you get a complete spectrum of disease in men, women and children. You can do big oncology cases. You can do little outpatient procedures. There’s a large spectrum of disease stages and opportunities to practice here.”
Kennedy received his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa where he was a member of the men’s swim team. He attended medical school there, too.
He completed his residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center Parkland Hospital in Dallas, a Level I trauma center.
“It was the same place they took former President John F. Kennedy when (Lee Harvey Oswald) shot him in … 1963,” Kennedy says. “In fact, my department chairman was a physician in the ER that day. … It was an interesting place. It has a lot of history.”
Kennedy’s residency prepared him for a career in medicine, he says.
“You were exposed to potentially one of everything by the time you got through,” he says. “With the volume of patients rolling through the door you got an outstanding education. By the time you left you were comfortable to do anything.”
After his residency, Kennedy moved from Dallas to Green Bay. As an Iowa native, Kennedy was familiar with the Midwest but he didn’t know much about Packers country.
“I liked the Packers and the Vikings when I grew up in northern Iowa but the only thing I knew about Green Bay was the Alka-Seltzer commercials and people sitting in stands at Lambeau Field in 90-below weather in long johns,” Kennedy says.
Over the years, Kennedy has grown fond of Green Bay. He’s practiced in Green Bay for more than 30 years. He’s been with Aurora BayCare Urological Surgeons for two decades.
Kennedy is “an advocate for patients to choose their own path,” he says.
“My job is to give you the options, explain your choices and explain the consequences of those choices,” he says. “But my job is not to make that decision for you. My job is to give you the best information that I can to help you make your own decision about what you want to do.”
In his free time, Kennedy enjoys fishing, hunting, golfing and traveling with his wife.
Dr. Timothy Kennedy is a board-certified urologist with Aurora BayCare Urological Surgeons. He sees patients in Green Bay and Marinette.
