Meet Dr. Thomas Wilkins, pain and rehab medicine physician

Many students enter college with a vague idea of what they want to study. Dr. Thomas Wilkins, a physiatrist with BayCare Clinic Pain & Rehab Medicine, not only had an idea, but knew exactly what he wanted to study.
“When I was in high school, I was really attracted to the biological sciences,” says Wilkins, a New York native. “In 11th grade, I had the opportunity to take human anatomy. I was fascinated by it. So, I pretty much knew that was the direction I was going when I went to college at Michigan State University. Right off the bat, I was a declared physiology major.”
At Michigan State, Wilkins excelled academically and was a catcher on the baseball team. He graduated in 1994, and it wasn’t long before the former Spartan transitioned into a Badger.
Wilkins attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, completed his internship at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital and Clinics in La Crosse and his residency at the UW Hospital and Clinics in Madison.
Immediately following his residency, Wilkins began his career with BayCare Clinic Pain & Rehab Medicine. His 15-year tenure with BayCare Clinic has been beneficial to Green Bay and its surrounding communities.
“I was the first person to bring musculoskeletal ultrasound to Green Bay,” Wilkins says.
“Ultrasound enhances the areas we couldn’t see before. And that’s the advance it has had with medicine. It basically gives us another way of looking at information that we previously couldn’t see or see well enough.”
Wilkins is proud that he has been able to treat patients with the best available resources thanks to his education and training.
“To be able to have a patient come back and thank you and almost break down in tears because you’re the first person that’s been able to actually give some sense of quality of life back, that’s the reward right there,” Wilkins says.
His message to people dealing with pain: “Don’t give up on yourself. You may have seen two, three, four, sometimes seven physicians and still haven’t found your source of what’s wrong. It’s not because there isn’t anything wrong, it just hasn’t been found yet. We like to feel that we excel in answering questions that haven’t previously been answered. So, don’t give up on yourself.”
When Wilkins isn’t busy taking care of others, he can be found traveling the world with his wife, Bobbie Jo.
“We are worldly wanderers. We appreciate the immersion into other cultures and experiences we don’t experience in our daily lives.”
So far, Wilkins and his wife have been to Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Central America and the South Pacific.
Dr. Thomas Wilkins is a non-operative physiatrist with BayCare Clinic Pain & Rehab Medicine. He offers musculoskeletal ultrasound, pain management, spasticity management, and physical medicine and rehabilitation treatments. He sees patients in Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay and Kaukauna.
