Meet Dr. Michael Schuh, oral and maxillofacial surgeon
Thu, Dec 6, 2018
Dr. Michael Schuh was shooting for nothing less than the stars. Before launching his career as an oral surgeon, he dreamed of making it to space.
“I looked into being an astronaut. I really wanted to be one. I talked to a couple of people in the Air Force, but there was about a 1-in-100,000 chance at getting into space, because it wasn’t through NASA at the time. It was through the service,” Schuh says. “I knew that wasn’t a very good chance.”
Knowing that he wanted a stable career and a flexible lifestyle, he turned to dentistry.
“As a young person, I liked my dentist and the lifestyle they had,” Schuh says. “I got into hygiene school at Marquette. People thought dental hygiene school was weird. It was a really good experience because I got exposed to dentistry so I would know very early in the process if I’d like it or not. I really liked it, but knew I needed more from the dental specialty. Oral surgery was that extra step.”
Schuh has worked as an oral surgeon with Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons BayCare Clinic for 18 years. He’s seen the difference he can make. That has reinforced his decision to become a surgeon.
“I think the bigger surgeries that you do, like jaw reconstruction, you can get some really dramatic results and you can change people’s lives,” Schuh says.
Schuh also has guided Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Bay Care Clinic through several remodeling projects.
“We just bought another building and we’re going to be remodeling it for another office up in Sturgeon Bay. It’s exciting and a challenge,” Schuh says. “I was part of building our Green Bay building and was part of remodeling our office in Manitowoc. (Dr.) Steve (Zent, another of our oral surgeons) and I have been here through all this. It’s great to see where all this has gone in 20 years.”
Outside of work, Schuh enjoys spending time outdoors and with his wife and three daughters.
“I like to snowmobile. That’s one of our big winter hobbies,” Schuh says. “In the summer, I like going to the cottage with my girls. I end up being the boat driver for my girls, my friend’s girls, my other friend’s girls. I also play golf, I like to do hunting trips every year, and we usually go to Disney with the family once a year.”
Dr. Michael Schuh is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon with BayCare Clinic. He sees patients in Green Bay, Manitowoc and Sturgeon Bay.
