Dr. Joseph Bergmann poses with his wife and son

Dr. Joseph Bergmann has in Green Bay, Wisconsin, what California and Florida and even Illinois could not offer him – the best quality of life.

Living in Green Bay, starting a family and working with BayCare Clinic Eye Specialists has given Bergmann the lifestyle he grew up desiring.

“I grew up in western Wisconsin, but I don’t like winter, so I left. I moved to California, then Florida, but my wife’s family is in Illinois and she wanted to be closer to family,” he says. “Green Bay was about equidistant between her family and mine and BayCare was looking for a provider at the time, so it worked out well.”

Bergmann hadn’t always planned on working as an ophthalmologist, but he hasn’t looked back since choosing his specialty area.

“I wanted something that involved science but didn’t like the idea of sitting alone in the office all day,” he says. “This job allows me to have some interaction with people, I can use my hands to fix things, and we get to use a lot of technology. There are a lot of neat, innovative things we do that you don’t do in all specialties.”

Bergmann enjoys the flexible lifestyle that comes with his job. He can spend time with his wife, son, and two dogs.

“I get to go home and see my family. There’s no overnight calls in a hospital. I don’t have to live right by a hospital,” he says. “I knew a couple ophthalmologists growing up and knew they were always at their kids’ sporting events, plays, school stuff. That was important to me to be able to be with my family.”

Bergmann, who specializes in glaucoma and cataract treatment, is also proud to make a difference as a physician.

“I think what we do daily, in terms of preserving and restoring sight, has an incredible impact on people’s quality of life and their ability to enjoy their years, especially their retirement years,” Bergmann says. “It’s nice to see them come back and be able to experience more things, like traveling or spending time with grandkids, because we could preserve their vision or make things better for them.”
