“I think pain is something a lot of people can feel, but people can’t always see. People can say they’ve been suffering pain for a long time, but you might look at them and think they look normal. They might feel powerless when they’re in pain.”

That’s one reason Dr. Danzhu Guo, a physician with BayCare Clinic, came to America from China to practice medicine and why he went into pain and rehab medicine.

Guo also was inspired by his father who was a surgeon in China.

“I went to medical school directly from high school. I was 17 years old and first wanted to be a rocket scientist, but my dad wanted me to go to medical school,” he says. “He was working as a doctor and helped make the right decision for me. I really love what I’m doing now. I’m happy what I’m doing as a physician and helping people.”

While working as pain and rehab medicine physician, Guo noticed patients recovered faster after undergoing minimally-invasive procedures. That sparked an idea for Guo and his brother Dr. Danqing Guo, who’s also a pain and rehab medicine physician with BayCare Clinic.

Together, the brothers worked on an innovative procedure to help treat carpal tunnel syndrome patients using a minimally-invasive technique. The procedure doesn’t use a scalpel and has no surgical incisions.

The procedure has been well-received by the national and international medical communities and by patients, especially those who don’t have the time necessary for undergoing traditional carpal tunnel surgery.

“Some patients know they have carpal tunnel, know they need surgery, but they don’t have time to take off for it and recovery, so they put it off and it does more damage,” he says.

Outside of treating patients, Guo enjoys spending time with his growing family.

“I’ve been married now for 20 years. We have three daughters and we have a granddaughter,” he says.

Dr. Danzhu Guo is a pain and rehab medicine physician with BayCare Clinic Pain & Rehab Medicine. He sees patients in Green Bay.
