Meet Dr. Ahmet Dervish, pain and rehab medicine

If the American dream is alive anywhere, it’s in the Midwest, Dr. Ahmet Dervish says.
He loves living in Wisconsin and its abundance of lakes, forests and farms. The Midwestern values of modesty and hard work drew him to Green Bay. But he had to move far from home to fulfill his dream.
“I was born in Cyprus, which is a small island in the east Mediterranean. I grew up in a very small rural village with not much exposure to schools, career paths, anything like that,” he says. “My parents were farmers and their daily life instilled my work ethic.”
Dervish left home at age 18 for medical school. He never considered another career.
He started as an orthopedic resident, then went into an anesthesiology program before choosing to become a pain management physician.
“I used to watch anesthesia residents during my time in orthopedics. … Once I got into anesthesia, I enjoyed what I did. You saw quick results. It was a gratifying feeling,” Dervish says. “But I was kind of missing the part of patient contact. You don’t get to know people. You don’t get to see them again or follow their life. … Being a pain medicine physician allows me to be present and connect with my patients. My hope is that patients feel heard, engage with their own care, and have a voice in every decision.”
Dervish doesn’t doubt he chose the right specialty. He enjoys working at BayCare Clinic.
“We’re part of a big group, but you are very independent in terms of how you practice medicine. … You choose what is right for the patient. It’s been a gratifying experience since I’ve been with BayCare,” he says.
Outside of work, Dervish stays busy enjoying what the Midwest offers. He lives on a small farm in Green Bay that’s filled with fruit trees, chickens and more.
“Over the past few years, I have restored the barns with the help and skills of an Amish craftsman,” he says. “During the winter months, you’ll find me chopping and stacking wood. During the summer months, I love to plant a garden.”
Dervish also loves spending time with his family.
“I’ve been married for 32 years and have been fortunate to raise three children in the Green Bay community,” Dervish says. “We are forever grateful to our church and for the love and guidance they showered upon our children in the absence of extended family.”
With his children grown, he’s looking forward to what the next stage of life brings.
“I would like to spend more time with my wife, enjoy the farm, and expand my apple and fruit orchards,” he says.
Dr. Ahmet Dervish is a fellowship-trained pain management physician with BayCare Clinic Pain & Rehab Medicine. He sees patients in Green Bay.
