Green Bay earns Bicycle Friendly Community honor

Mon, Nov 21, 2016

BayCare Clinic congratulates Green Bay on earning honorable mention as a Bicycle Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists.

That designation, announced Wednesday, November 16, was earned on Green Bay’s first bid for consideration. The application was submitted by the city and by Live54218, an initiative to make the Green Bay area the healthiest community in the nation.

“On our journey to become a community where it is easy and safe for all residents to be active, a diagnosis from the League of American Bicyclists on our current state is a valuable asset as we chart our course forward,” said Jen Van Den Elzen, executive director of Live54218.

The league evaluates communities on a number of factors, including engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement and evaluation and planning with respect to bicyclists.

Green Bay is one of 19 Wisconsin areas recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community. Madison is one of five U.S. cities earning platinum status, the highest rating. Others are Fitchburg, La Crosse and Shorewood (silver); Appleton, Dane County, Eau Claire, Menomonie, Middleton, Milwaukee, Monona, Onalaska, River Falls, Sheboygan County, Stevens Point, Sturgeon Bay and Wausau (bronze); and Fond du Lac (honorable mention).

BayCare Clinic promotes bicycling as a healthy, family-friendly activity through its BayCare Clinic Bikes community wellness initiative. BayCare Clinic Bikes also works toward increasing bicycling and advocating for bicycling safety throughout northeastern Wisconsin.

The new BayCare Clinic Century Bayshore to Lakeshore ride, which will be June 3, 2017, is sponsored by the BayCare Clinic Foundation. The event offers 100-, 60- and 20-mile courses, all beginning and ending at BayCare Clinic’s new corporate headquarters at 1035 Kepler Drive on Green Bay’s far east side. Registration is open at
