BayCare Clinic Pain & Rehab Medicine offers new pain block

BayCare Clinic has an alternative to prescription pain medication for chronic hip and knee pain.
That alternative is Coolief, a minimally-invasive outpatient procedure, that uses cooled radiofrequency technology to reduce or eliminate chronic hip or knee pain. BayCare Clinic Pain & Rehab Medicine is the only provider in northeastern Wisconsin offering the treatment.
Coolief treatments are delivered through specialized needles inserted into the area to be treated. The needles emit cooled radiofrequency into the treatment area. This safely burns away sensory nerves to stop them from transmitting pain signals.
“Pain relief usually begins one to two weeks after the Coolief procedure,” Wilkins says. “On average, these treatments provide our patients relief for about nine months. The relief lasts until the nerves regenerate and function normally. Additional treatments may be needed to extend pain relief.”
Coolief is a less drastic option for people with moderate to severe osteoarthritis pain who are not ready to have hip or knee replacement surgery, or who have health conditions that don’t make them a good candidate for surgery.
“Because Coolief technology targets sensory nerves which lie outside the joint capsule, this treatment can be applied to patients with persistent pain even after total joint replacement surgeries, a population of patients who traditionally have had very few treatment options,” Howson said.
Coolief treatments don’t involve drugs or pharmaceuticals so they offer an alternative to prescription opioids.
“That’s one of the reasons many of our patients appreciate Coolief,” Wilkins says. “Given the current challenges with opioid abuse and addiction, here’s an option that removes that from the equation.”
Coolief treatments are covered by most insurance plans.
