BayCare Clinic offers helmets for Broken Spoke bike rentals

GREEN BAY – Cyclists who rent bikes from Broken Spoke Bike Studio in downtown Green Bay will have a helmet included with the rental, thanks to a sponsorship from BayCare Clinic and its community wellness initiative.
BayCare Clinic provided 20 helmets to the Broken Spoke to be included with bike rentals. The gesture is part of the clinic’s efforts to promote biking as a healthy, family-friendly activity through its BayCare Clinic Bikes initiative. The initiative is aimed toward increasing bicycling and advocating for bicycling safety throughout northeast Wisconsin.
“When cyclists wear a helmet while riding, they significantly lower their risk of serious head injury,” said Dr. Steven Schmidt, a plastic surgeon with BayCare Clinic and a spokesperson for the bike initiative. “An avoidable head injury could negatively affect a person’s life forever. We want to remind the public that riding without a helmet, even for a seemingly harmless bike ride, is a huge risk that could have lasting consequences.”
The gesture was eagerly welcomed by the Broken Spoke, co-owner Sarah Hardy says.
“We’re appreciative of the partnership with BayCare Clinic and their healthy biking and wellness efforts,” she said. “This partnership fits in well with our commitment to community engagement and outreach.”
Broken Spoke Bike Studio originated in Manitowoc and moved to downtown Green Bay in 2014.
BayCare Clinic also will provide helmets for Adventure Park at the Brown County Reforestation Camp.
