BayCare Clinic knee patients have new surgical option

MANITOWOC – A new orthopedic medicine procedure at BayCare Clinic gives total knee replacement patients the option to preserve their functioning anterior cruciate ligaments during surgery.
The procedure, commonly referred to as ACL-preserving total knee replacement surgery, eliminates for many patients the traditional need to sacrifice their healthy ACLs.
Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic, 501 N. 10th St., Manitowoc, offers the procedure, making it one of only two approved orthopedic medicine practices north of Milwaukee to provide the service.
The technology behind the procedure – approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March 2013 – was developed by the bio-medical company, Biomet. It is called the Vanguard XP Total Knee System. BayCare Clinic’s orthopedic surgeons only offer the procedure at their Manitowoc facility.
“This procedure was developed to work seamlessly with a patient’s own anatomy, the goal being to keep the healthy ligaments attached,” said Carl A. DiRaimondo, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic. “Typically a healthy ACL – located deep within the knee to provide it stability – is removed to make way for the surgical implants in traditional total knee replacement surgery. With this new technology, we can eliminate the osteoarthritis but keep the ACL. That ensures the new knee functions much more naturally, as a normal, healthy knee would.”
The knee replacement procedure takes about 90 minutes. It is not for everyone, DiRaimondo said. “For example, patients with damage to their ACL or who have more significant joint deformity due to their osteoarthritis would not be candidates for the ACL preserving knee replacement. The intent of this procedure is to take a very successful operation, total knee replacement, and improve upon patient satisfaction by maintaining near-normal knee ligament function.”
Dr. DiRaimondo performs the ACL preserving knee surgery procedure. Other providers at Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic in Manitowoc include:
