BayCare Clinic in the News: Emergency airway training

Tue, Sep 19, 2017

Dr. Michael Mackowski of Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay, instructs members of the Village of Ashwaubenon and city of De Pere EMS teams on a technique to create an emergency airway in critical care patients.

WHO: Dr. Michael Mackowski, a general and vascular surgeon with Aurora BayCare Medical Center, demonstrated for De Pere and Ashwaubenon EMS personnel, and WBAY Channel 2 News, how to create an emergency airway.

WHAT: Mackowski helped train the EMS participants in the life-saving cricothyroidotomy technique. Cricothyroidotomies are rare – only being used to create an emergency airway when conventional approaches to aid a patient’s failing respiration are unsuccessful. Mackowski demonstrated the technique using pig tracheas. Each of the EMS participants did hands-on training using the tracheas.
