BayCare Clinic Foundation offers free snow sports helmets

Tue, Nov 8, 2016

GREEN BAY – For many, winter means the return of skiing, snowboarding, skating and other snow sports. For the BayCare Clinic Foundation, winter means another opportunity to remind you about the importance of protecting your head.

As a way to get that message across, the foundation will hand out about 300 free youth snow sport helmets during this weekend’s 46th annual Green Bay YMCA Ski & Sport Sale.

The event takes place Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13, at the YMCA’s east side facility, 1740 S. Huron Road, Green Bay. The Saturday pre-sale event is 6-8 p.m.; admission is $25 per family for the first 100 families registered in advance. The Sunday main event is 7 a.m.-1 p.m.; admission is $1 per person or $3 per family.

“Research tells us the leading cause of death from sports-related injuries is traumatic brain injury,” said Dr. Joseph Hodgson, president of the BayCare Clinic Foundation Board. “Add to that inherent risk slippery, snowy surfaces and speed and you quickly increase the opportunity for injury. It’s a risk we hope to help reduce through this free snow sports helmet giveaway.”

Information from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons further underscores the importance of snow sports helmets.

“According to a Johns Hopkins Medicine-led study, an estimated 10 million Americans ski or snowboard in the United States each year, with about 600,000 injuries reported annually,” the AANS said. “Severe head trauma accounts for about 20 percent of all skiing- and snowboarding-related injuries, and of those head injuries, 22 percent are severe enough to cause loss of consciousness or concussion.  Head injuries are the most frequent cause of death and severe disability among skiers and snowboarders.”

The youth helmets (including sizes for teen-aged recipients) will be available while supplies last. Children must be present for fitting.

The Ski & Sports Sale will also offer:

  • Discounted new and gently used equipment
  • Ski and snowboard equipment including boots, bindings, poles, downhill and cross-country skis and snowboards
  • Discounted advance season lift tickets from area ski hills
