In late November 2020, a motor vehicle accident took the life of 29-year-old Shelby Matzke. She was the daughter of De Pere Fire Chief Al Matzke and Toni Matzke, an Aurora BayCare Medical Center employee.

Members of the De Pere Fire Department and the Gibraltar Fire Department gathered recently to remember her.

Shelby’s family established a memorial fund for the Door County-based Gibraltar Fire Department. That’s because the Matzke family is part of the Chambers Island Emergency Response Team, a first-responder group on the island.

Gibraltar Fire plans to use the funds to purchase an emergency response utility terrain vehicle. The BayCare Clinic Foundation has donated $12,625 toward the purchase of the vehicle.

“I think it’s just a terrific way to memorialize Shelby,” says Dr. Christopher Sorrells. He is a BayCare Clinic Foundation board member and an emergency medicine physician.
