BayCare Clinic aids De Pere Fire purchase of CPR device
Mon, Dec 21, 2015
DE PERE – First responders at De Pere Fire Rescue, with help from BayCare Clinic, recently purchased equipment designed to support and enhance their CPR efforts.
The equipment, a Lucas Chest Compression System, is a portable device that automates cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR as it is commonly called. BayCare Clinic physicians, the BayCare Clinic Foundation and a member of the clinic system’s leadership team contributed nearly $15,000 for the purchase.
“It’s a fantastic device that will benefit our entire community,” said Al Matzke, assistant fire chief, De Pere Fire Rescue. “It compresses a patient’s chest at an enhanced rate; we’re talking 100 chest compressions per minute. While the device is doing its work, our paramedics can focus their energies on other areas of the patient’s emergency care during the ambulance ride to the hospital.”
The Lucas device keeps a patient’s blood circulating, which in turn delivers much needed oxygen to the patient’s organs. The device can be kept pumping on arrival at the hospital while physicians or surgeons continue providing emergency care to the patient.
“We’re thankful for the financial support we received from BayCare Clinic,” Matzke said. “And we’re happy to report we’ve already used the Lucas device and it exceeded our expectations.”
BayCare Clinic said supporting the Lucas device purchase was an easy decision.
“We are a community-minded organization, continuously seeking opportunities to help improve the health and wellness of the people in our region,” said Dr. Greg Welsh, director of physician operations. “Supporting De Pere Fire Rescue with this purchase is well within our scope, so it was a pleasure to assist.”
