Aurora BayCare surgeon a mentor for robotic-assisted hernia repair

Tue, Aug 22, 2017

GREEN BAY – Aurora BayCare Medical Center’s Dr. Cynthia Geocaris is Wisconsin’s first-ever mentor for robotic general surgery.

The hospital recently was designated a physician mentoring site for the da Vinci Surgical System, a brand of surgical robot.

“This designation is a real testament to Aurora BayCare’s commitment to medical excellence and the advancement of surgery in northeast Wisconsin,” said Geocaris, a board-certified general surgeon at Aurora BayCare. “Patients will benefit directly from this designation as we teach more surgeons new surgical methods that lessen pain, shorten hospital stays and promote quicker recovery.”

Geocaris will train surgeons nationwide looking to learn minimally-invasive robotic hernia repair or to sharpen their use of the da Vinci Surgical System.

Annually, fewer than 2 percent of all active surgeons in the U.S. qualify to lead case observation sites, according to Intuitive Surgical, manufacturer of the da Vinci Surgical System and originator of the mentoring program.

Intuitive Surgical works with the Food and Drug Administration, hospitals and professional medical societies, all of which play a role in medical training. The company collaborates with experienced robotic-assisted surgeons who provide case observations for colleagues. Sites are evaluated annually to ensure they are providing a quality educational experience.
