Dr. Armaan Carrigan Shaikh, an interventional cardiologist with Aurora BayCare Cardiology, was interviewed remotely by WBAY Channel 2 News for a story about an NFL player’s on-field cardiac arrest.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who is 24, experienced cardiac arrest and collapsed Monday night after making a tackle during the nationally televised game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“In this case, from what we do know, the primary reason for that was an arrhythmia. And almost certainly, from what we do know, it’s something called Commotio Cordis, which is when the heart goes into an arrhythmia from a blunt trauma,” Shaikh says.

Time is of the essence when it comes to treating cardiac arrest, he added.

The interview is available online. Watch it here.
