Ask a Doctor: Protect kids’ eyes from injury
Wed, Oct 3, 2018
Eye injuries aren’t uncommon among children and can be caused by several factors, like getting hit by a baseball, scratches, or a chemical splash.
“Fortunately, most eye injuries are preventable as long as we follow a few basic practices,” says Dr. Benjamin Phillips, an ophthalmologist with BayCare Clinic. He sees patients in Manitowoc.
To protect your kids’ eyes from serious injury, Phillips suggests:
- Providing kids with protective eyewear and showing them the correct way to use it
- Showing children how to properly carry sharp or pointed objects
- Teaching children to avoid pointing flying toys at one another
- Being cautious around fireworks and campfires
