About iovera°

iovera° is an FDA-cleared system using precise, controlled doses of intense cold as a nerve block to manage pain after surgery. Treatments are delivered through a portable, handheld device. Treatments are done before surgery to reduce pain and ease recovery after surgery.

iovera° treatments use cryoneurolysis, applying targeted cold to a peripheral nerve and preventing the nerve from sending pain signals. There is no damage to surrounding tissue.

The cold’s effect on the nerve is immediate but temporary. It provides pain relief until the nerve regenerates and functions normally. The rate of regeneration depends on the individual and the location of the nerve being treated. Nerves usually regenerate at a rate of approximately 1 millimeter per day.

iovera° treatments are delivered via a small probe. They are minimally invasive. There is minimal pain. They usually are performed in office, with local anesthesia applied to the area being treated. Patients may experience pressure and sensations of cold, warmth, tingling or tapping while being treated. These sensations felt during the delivery of the cold indicate that the treatment is working.

iovera° treatments address only pain, and not the underlying conditions for which your physician has recommended surgery.

Because iovera° treatments don’t involve drugs or pharmaceuticals, they offer an alternative to opioids.

Before treatment

Your physician will discuss your medications, health conditions and health history. There is little to do to prepare for iovera° treatments beyond wearing clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. Your physician will provide any other instructions if necessary.

After treatment

Most patients can resume normal, non-strenuous activities the same day. Your physician will develop a post-treatment plan for you.

Side effects are comparable to other needle-based treatments, such as localized but minimal pain, bruising, swelling, tenderness, tingling or numbness. Such side effects usually clear up quickly on their own.

Keep the iovera° treatment area clean and dry while you heal. If you experience soreness, apply ice or use over-the-counter pain medications as directed by your physician.
