Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal Cord Injuries

In the United States, approximately 265,000 people live with spinal cord injury and an estimated 12,000 new injuries occur each year. Over 80% of reported spinal cord injuries occurred in males. And while the average age at time of injury is in your 30's, spinal cord injuries are actually most prevalent in adolescents age 15 to 24 and seniors over the age of 75.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of spinal cord injury ( 41.3%), followed by falls (27.3%), acts of violence (15%), sports (7.9%) and all others (8.5%).1

Approximately 40% of those people who experience a spinal cord injury will recover well enough to return to work, although this figure is strongly influenced by education and work history prior to injury. About half of all spinal cord injuries are cervical spine or neck.

Secondary medical complications from a spinal cord injury are common. These include pain, depression, urinary tract infections, pressure ulcers, spasticity, pneumonia, deep vein thrombosis and kidney stones.

Once a patient's condition has been stabilized, he or she will likely be moved to a rehabilitative facility. During rehabilitation, therapists work on maintaining and improving muscle function. Patients may also need to work on fine motor skills and learning adaptive techniques to perform common daily tasks.

A social worker may also help connect both the patient and the family to community resources and support.
