GYN Cancer Research and Clinical Trials
The Aurora BayCare Medical Center Gynecologic Oncology team conducts more gynecologic oncology research than any area provider. We participate in clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute’s Gynecologic Oncology Group and the nation’s leading pharmaceutical companies. Clinical trials offer the latest drugs and treatments that can provide new hope and better quality of life for women with reproductive cancers.
Screening and Prevention
Gynecologic cancer is not completely preventable, but there are things you can do to reduce your risk:
- Get regular Pap smears, as recommended by your doctor
- Abstain from sex or limit your sexual partners to decrease your exposure to HPV, the virus that can lead to cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancer
- Use a condom during sex to reduce your exposure to HPV and other sexually transmitted diseases
- Don’t smoke—smoking can interact with an HPV infection and accelerate cancer development
- Get vaccinated against HPV (for young women and men)
We also offer genetic counseling which can provide hereditary cancer testing for women with a significant family history of cancer. If you are genetically predisposed for gynecologic cancer, our doctors can recommend a plan for preventative care and screenings.
