Gynecologic Oncology

Gynecologic Oncology

Aurora BayCare Gynecologic Oncology provides comprehensive care for women with cancer in their reproductive organs. Our multidisciplinary team offers the most advanced surgical procedures, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, genetic counseling and access to clinical trials.

Dr. Peter R. Johnson, a gynecologic oncologist, leads our team of women’s cancer specialists. Dr. Johnson is the first surgeon to perform robotic assisted gynecologic cancer surgery in Wisconsin and is renowned for his expertise in complex surgical cases.

A Wisconsin native, Dr. Johnson is an adjunct clinical professor with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and a nationally known instructor for robotic surgery.

Dr. Johnson and his team treat women with gynecologic cancers as well as certain benign (non-cancerous) conditions that may require surgery:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Uterine cancer
  • Vaginal and vulvar cancers
  • Ovarian risk reduction surgery
  • Ovarian cyst or mass
  • Complex endometrial hyperplasia

Fertility Sparing Options

Gynecologic cancer treatments may interfere with fertility. If you wish to have children in the future, we do everything possible to honor your wishes. With our expertise, we can offer curative cancer surgery that emphasizes fertility conservation and quality of life concerns.

We’re here to help you and your loved ones make informed treatment decisions, balancing your cancer treatments options with your fertility goals.

Multidisciplinary Approach

Your gynecologic cancer treatment will be reviewed by a team of experts. There are Aurora system-wide weekly interdisciplinary meetings to review the best treatment options for the women in our care, customizing an individual plan that is best for you.

Our cancer team includes gynecologic oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists as well as other specialized physicians skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancer.

GYN Cancer Research and Clinical Trials

The Aurora BayCare Medical Center Gynecologic Oncology team conducts more gynecologic oncology research than any area provider. We participate in clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute’s Gynecologic Oncology Group and the nation’s leading pharmaceutical companies. Clinical trials offer the latest drugs and treatments that can provide new hope and better quality of life for women with reproductive cancers.

Screening and Prevention

Gynecologic cancer is not completely preventable, but there are things you can do to reduce your risk:

  1. Get regular Pap smears, as recommended by your doctor
  2. Abstain from sex or limit your sexual partners to decrease your exposure to HPV, the virus that can lead to cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancer
  3. Use a condom during sex to reduce your exposure to HPV and other sexually transmitted diseases
  4. Don’t smoke—smoking can interact with an HPV infection and accelerate cancer development
  5. Get vaccinated against HPV (for young women and men)

We also offer genetic counseling which can provide hereditary cancer testing for women with a significant family history of cancer. If you are genetically predisposed for gynecologic cancer, our doctors can recommend a plan for preventative care and screenings.
