About John Awowale, MD

Dr. John Awowale didn’t have to look far for the inspiration to become an orthopedic surgeon.

He saw it in positive interactions with medical providers while growing up in Hillsboro, a small town in southwestern Wisconsin. He saw it at home, from his mother, a nurse.

Dr. Awowale earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. He completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison. He also completed fellowship training in sports medicine at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

He didn’t have to look far for the inspiration to pursue sports medicine, either. He’s always been an athlete. He plays recreational basketball, volleyball and golf, and enjoys skiing.

Dr. Awowale respects his patients’ passions.

“I like to take a holistic approach to patient care, understanding not only their injury or disease process but understanding their hobbies, occupation, and goals,” he says.

That means a different path for each patient.

“I do enjoy performing surgeries and helping my patients return their normal activities, but I do keep in mind many injuries can be treated successfully conservatively without the need for surgery with properly directed therapies,” he says.

In his free time, Dr. Awowale enjoys attending comedy shows, trying new foods, travel and fishing.
