Women of varying sizes lined up to show off cellulite free legs

It doesn’t matter if you’re a size 0, 10, 12 or 22 – cellulite doesn’t discriminate.

Anyone can get cellulite. Diet and exercise can sometimes help reduce its appearance but will not get rid of it completely.

In fact, 90 percent of women will get cellulite at some point in their lives.

Cellulite is caused by fibrous bands under the skin that have thickened and become taut. As we age, fat cells enlarge, and skin thins. When the fat cells push against the fibrous tissue it creates the “dimpling” effect we see as cellulite.

“Until recently, solutions for cellulite ranged from creams to lasers to surgical procedures,” says Cassady Danelski of Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic

The range of effectiveness for cellulite treatments has been even more broad.

“There really hasn’t been a great solution for cellulite until now,” she says.

QWO® is the first FDA-approved injectable treatment for moderate to severe cellulite in adult women. It’s available at Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic.

During the procedure, enzymes called collagenases are injected under the skin to break down and release the fibrous bands that cause dimpling.

Treatments take approximately 30 minutes and require no downtime after the procedure.

“Patients receive a series of three treatments spaced three weeks apart,” Danelski says. “Each treatment targets several areas, and some people see results in as little as ten weeks.”

Bruising at the injection location is the biggest side effect of QWO. Danelski cautions patients on scheduling the treatment close to a trip where they might be in a swimsuit.

“Bruising is the most common side effect we see,” she says. “That’s to be expected. The injection is breaking up those fibrous bands under the skin. Our team tries to communicate that with patients in advance. We can work with them to discuss timing and when they should schedule the treatments.”

Danelski and her colleagues, Trish Kloss and Janelle Klubertanz are specially trained to perform the QWO injection treatment for cellulite.

They provide QWO treatment at 2605 Development Drive in Green Bay, and at the Aurora BayCare Health Center at 1500 Arbor Way in Kaukauna.
