When do tonsils need to go?
Monday, March 4, 2013
"When is the right time to take out tonsils?" As an otolaryngologist, I get this question a lot. People often think tonsils are only removed for strep infections. This is not true. There are guidelines that have been developed after extensive study to help us decide when tonsil removal is beneficial.
One reason for removing tonsils is for recurring infections of the throat where there is a sore throat associated with fever or "swollen glands." This includes strep infections but it is not limited to them.
Another group of patients who benefits from tonsil removal are those with large tonsils that cause snoring, sleep disturbance and similar symptoms of airway obstruction.
There are other reasons tonsils are removed as well and we are happy to evaluate patients and give them guidance as to whether it is time to remove them or to leave them be. Click here to request an appointment with a BayCare Clinic Ear, Nose & Throat provider.
