The good word is getting out about Kybella®.

In April 2015, the FDA approved this treatment for adults with moderate to severe fat below the chin, or submental fat. Allergan, which makes Kybella®, thinks it eventually will be as popular as Botox®.  Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic now offers this treatment.

How does it work?

“Kybella® is deoxycholic acid, which is acid found in our gall bladder, something that is natural in the body,” says Janelle Klubertanz, a certified plastic surgery nurse and aesthetic coordinator.

Kybella® is an in-office treatment that takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Your healthcare provider will give you a series of injections into the fat under your chin at each treatment session.  Some patients may need up to three sessions approximately one month apart.

“After you have the series of injections done, you can expect swelling that usually is gone in one to four days,” Klubertanz says, “but there typically are no restrictions involved.”

Kybella might be right for you if:

  • You’re bothered by fat under the chin (submental fullness)

  • You don’t want surgery

  • You feel the condition makes you look older or heavier than you actually are

  • You eat well and exercise, but the fullness under the chin doesn’t go away
