What causes acne?

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, about 40 to 50 million Americans have acne at any one time.

In this video, Nick Grimm, PA-C, at Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic, discusses common causes of acne and how it’s treated.

"One of the major causes of acne is genetics,” Grimm says. “If I see a mother and father that come in with their child and you can clearly tell that they had bad acne growing up and generally they volunteer that information, we tend to want to treat that acne more aggressively early on."

Grimm sees patients of a wide variety of ages that suffer from acne – from teenagers to adults that have been suffering from acne on and off their whole lives.

Treating acne has a lot to do with what the patient wants.

"One thing that I pride myself on doing when someone comes in to have acne evaluated is to make sure they are fully aware of what their options are and how aggressive they want to be in treating their acne,” Grimm says.

“When you are bothered by your acne, we talk about all the treatment options and we make sure that patients have input, they are participants in making treatment decisions."
