As the weather warms up, more and more Wisconsinites take to the outdoors, and not always with the proper skin protection.

According to Nick Grimm, PA-C, dermatology services provider at Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic, behavior like that is one of the primary causes of skin cancer.

“One out of every six Americans will have one type of skin cancer during their lifetime,” says Grimm. “And that number is much higher when we talk about pre-cancerous changes in the skin.”

Approximately 85 percent of skin cancer is going to develop in sun-exposed skin, says Grimm.

The earlier we can catch it, the better it is for the patient and the outcome.  “The smaller the skin cancer, the smaller the surgery to remove it,” he says.

Grimm recently participated in a question and answer session on Facebook about skin cancer detection and prevention.

In the video, Grimm reviews the warning signs of skin cancer, treatment options and prevention methods.

He also reviewed the important role skin screenings play in early detection, and how patients should feel comfortable during these quick, but possibly life-saving appointments.

“I recommend a yearly skin exam for everyone, every year,” says Grimm.

Most often, people present with some type of skin lesion or mole that is concerning to them, but not always, and that’s OK, he adds.

“I would say trust your instincts,” Grimm says. “If you’re worried about something, even if it’s been there for a while… but you don’t quite trust it, follow your gut and have it evaluated by somebody who’s diagnosed a number of skin cancers.”
