Ugh, allergies. With them comes itchy, watery eyes, sneezes, and sniffles.

Left untreated, allergies also can lead to additional sinus issues, says Dr. Jon Slezak, otolaryngologist with BayCare Clinic Ear, Nose, & Throat.

Dr. Slezak recently participated in a Facebook LIVE question and answer session where he discussed allergies and other common sinus conditions.

“Allergies are very common,” says Slezak. “Approximately 25 percent of the U.S. population experiences some type of symptoms related to allergies.”

Individuals who suffer from allergies are exposed to something in their environment that sets off an inflammatory reaction, says Slezak.

Classic symptoms of allergies include itchy nose, watery eyes, nasal congestion, nasal drainage, and sneezing.

Nasal drainage can cause occasional throat irritation or coughing as well.

Additional symptoms can also include sinus pressure and blockage.

According to Slezak, environmental causes can be seasonal and include pollen from flowering trees, grasses, or ragweed. It can also be caused by indoor environments with pet dander and dust.

If not treated, allergies can lead to chronic sore throat, congestion that can lead to symptoms of sleep apnea or even ear infections, particularly in children, he says.
