Stephen’s story: UroLift is ‘a game-changer for me’
Monday, November 25, 2019
Stephen Brada dealt with urinary issues for years.
“When it got to the point where the kids were making fun of me, I knew I had to make a change,” says Stephen, who is in his 50s.
He was getting up several times a night and never felt like his bladder was empty.
“I had trouble getting through a movie at the movie theater and road trips were really difficult,” Stephen says.
In 2019, and before things got worse, Stephen started looking for solutions. He found UroLift.
UroLift is a minimally-invasive treatment that can help men with prostate issues. During the procedure, a urological surgeon lifts the prostate tissue and holds it back with implants.
The procedure prevents the tissue from blocking the urethra and allows urine to flow normally.
Stephen, an anesthesiologist with BayCare Clinic, had seen the UroLift procedure performed and thought it would be a good solution for him.
“I knew I wanted to avoid some of the bigger surgeries,” he says. “The UroLift procedure seemed kind of like the ideal situation for me -- minimally invasive, but with really good results.”
He performed Stephen’s procedure in the spring of 2019. It was done in the operating room under moderate sedation.
Stephen returned home in a few hours.
“Life afterwards is back to what life used to be in my 20s and 30s,” Stephen says. “I can go several hours without having to worry about where’s the nearest restroom. I can golf with friends. I can go to a movie with my kids … it’s definitely been a game-changer for me.”
Stephen has friends who have dealt with similar issues. He urges others to not wait to get treatment.
“It’s been life-altering for me,” Stephen says. “The investment of time – a week of being laid up – is definitely worth the change.”
