Reduce your oral cancer risk

Tuesday, February 16, 2016

Almost 50,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with oral cancer in 2016, more than 130 people every day, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation. That number has been growing for more than a decade.

So see your dentist and have your mouth examined at least once a year.

The American Cancer Society points the finger at two prime suspects: “Most oral cancers could be prevented if people did not use tobacco or drink heavily.”

Oral cancers? Sure. Sometimes it’s mouth cancer, or tongue cancer, or tonsil cancer, or throat cancer. Sometimes it’s lip cancer. Sometimes it’s oropharyngeal cancer, which is cancer of the back of the mouth.

People over 55 are most likely to get oral cancer, but that’s not the only group.

“We’re seeing an increasing number of younger people with oral cancers and precancerous conditions,” says Dr. Steve A. Zent, DDS, MD, an oral surgeon with Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons BayCare Clinic.

When caught early, oral cancer has a high rate of recovery.

If you have mouth sores that don’t heal or lingering mouth pain or lumps in your throat and mouth – three of the most common symptoms – ask for a referral to our team. We see patients at clinic locations in Green Bay, Bellevue, Manitowoc and Sturgeon Bay.
