Insurance and oral surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery can correct a number of problems, injuries, diseases and defects. When most people walk into an oral surgery office they assume that only their dental insurance will apply to their procedure.
However, when you visit Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons of BayCare Clinic’s office, bring both your medical and dental insurance information. Many of the procedures they perform will be covered first by medical insurance, with dental insurance covering some as well. The treatment needed and how your medical and dental plans are designed determine coverage.
Oral surgeries that are typically covered by medical insurance:
- Trauma to the face and oral cavity
- Treatment of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder
- Correction of facial deformities
- Facial bone diseases
The reason we ask for both your medical and dental insurance is that we are contracted with a number of policies/plans. These contracts allow us to submit claims so our patients pay less out-of-pocket… we maximize the benefits which patients receive. It can take 6-8 weeks for a response from some insurance companies regarding a pre-authorization. We encourage patients to call their carrier to expedite the process.
