Dr. Jason George DeVries explains why you should ditch the flip flops

Who knew flip flops could lead to ankle, hip, knee and even back pain?

“In Wisconsin, people are typically wearing boots or good shoes all winter, but in the summer people like to get into flip flops and other unsupportive footwear. The problem with that is that although it feels good and allows you to get some air on your toes, it does provide sticks, twigs, or stones to get in there; they are relatively unprotected,” said Dr. Jason George DeVries, foot and ankle surgeon at Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic.

Let’s think about what flip flops are actually made of. Usually they are made of one flat piece of rubber and a flimsy strap. Arch support and foot coverage are missing from this situation.

Dr. DeVries warns about the flimsy structure of flip flops, “They are unsupportive. People can end up with twisted ankles or irritated feet.”

Bend it test

Can’t give up your sandal habit? When browsing in a store, make sure to perform the “bend it test”. Bend the sandal, and if it easily bends in half, put it back. It doesn’t have enough support for your foot.

When to see a doctor

If you are experiencing ongoing pain from your sandals, contact Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic. You can request an online appointment here.
