 Back to school eye exam

Children and teenagers head back to school soon. One of the best ways to ensure they have healthy vision and can see well in the classroom is by having regular, thorough eye exams.

Getting a young person to the eye doctor isn’t always easy. The Wisconsin Optometric Association offers these tips for scheduling an exam.

  • Best time of day: Early in the day.
  • Best way to ease a child’s fears: Tell them there won’t be any shots.
  • Best way to have a great child exam: Practice looking at pictures. Make it a game. Have fun.

“We get the best results when parents see their child’s eye exam through their child’s eyes and prepare accordingly,” said Dr. Katie Buchholz, an optometrist with BayCare Clinic Eye Specialists in Manitowoc.

The best time of year to schedule an eye exam for a child or teenager is late spring, three to four months before school starts. However, it’s so important to make sure they’re seeing properly that any time is a good time for an eye exam.
