Fire it up
Thursday, April 30, 2015
It’s time to fire up those grills! The weather is getting nicer each day and grocery stores are stocking up on barbecue favorites. We can help you make healthier choices this grilling season.
Let there be light! (On the grill)
Grilling doesn’t have to be packed with calories. If you want to cut the calories from your meat, begin with choosing lean cuts. Skirt or flank steaks are healthy options that grill well, similar to a hamburger.
Chicken is always a lean choice. Are you craving more flavors? Use or make a delectable marinade and let the chicken immerse in it overnight for some savory flavor.
For the picky eaters, skip the hot dogs and use pork skewers instead. They are much healthier and can be easily skewered with your favorite vegetables and flavored with a light vinaigrette.
Tasty sides for your dinner table
Try a new spin on French fries: not fried, grilled! Toss frozen fries in aluminum foil and fold around it to make a bowl shape. Add your favorite toppings and let cook for a little longer. We suggest this recipe with cheese, bacon and green onions.
Salads can be grilled too. It’s easy to grill hearts of romaine lettuce to achieve a smoky, caramelized flavor to your favorite salad. Try this grilled Caesar salad soon.
Desserts you can make on the grill
Grilling does not have to stop with meats and veggies – dessert can be prepared right on the grill. Sweeten up your meal with throwing slices of peaches and pineapple on the grill. The prep is minimal, too. Just slice the fruit to expose a large mass of its insides and set over the heat. Feeling indulgent? Sprinkle brown sugar on before you grill.
