Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic is hosting the 7th annual BRAs of the Bay on Thursday, October 21 at 6 p.m. at Badger State Brewing Company, 990 Tony Canadeo Run, in Green Bay.

The annual event, held virtually in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, seeks to close the loop on breast cancer and raise awareness about breast reconstruction rights for breast cancer patients in the community.

The federal Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act mandates coverage of breast reconstruction for breast cancer patients even if the reconstruction is delayed until after cancer treatment is completed.

“Often times, patients feel compelled to rush right in… (but) they have time to think about their options and think about the implications of the different surgical treatment (options) they've been given, so that when they look back in five years they're very happy with the choice that they've made, and know that it's the right one for them," says Dr. Steven Schmidt, a plastic surgeon with Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic.

“What many patients don’t realize, and why we’re trying to raise awareness is that reconstruction is also covered by insurance for all breast cancer patients – no matter when they decide to have surgery,” Schmidt adds.

“Undergoing breast reconstruction can have a profound physical and emotional impact for breast cancer patients,” says Dr. Elizabeth O’Connor, plastic surgeon with Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic. “Our goal with this event is to help empower patients, and to help make sure every patient diagnosed with breast cancer knows about their options.”

Each year, BRAs of the Bay highlights stories of breast cancer survivors and showcases several hand-decorated bras - designed by local businesses and community members to help raise awareness and funds for the cause.

Since its inception, the BRAs of the Bay event has raised more than $72,000 for the cause.

This year, the event will feature an informational panel discussion, hors d’oeuvres from a local eatery, a cash bar, and a silent auction. Winners of the 2021 BRAs of the Bay bra decorating contest will also be announced at the event.

Voting for the event’s annual BRAs of the Bay bra decorating contest will take place online October 1 through October 20. Vote for your favorite decorated bra online, once per day throughout the week. You can also donate to the cause online.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from BRAs of the Bay benefit the Ribbon of Hope Foundation and the National Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day initiative with support from the BayCare Clinic Foundation, the Plastic Surgery Foundation, and Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic

Money donated to the Ribbon of Hope Foundation stays in the community to help provide emotional, financial, and educational support to patients diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer in Brown and Kewaunee Counties.

Tickets to attend the social event are $20. For more information baycare.net/braday.
