It’s time to start thinking about decorating a bra to help raise awareness for breast reconstruction rights!
The 2020 BRAs of the Bay event – the sixth annual – will be virtual. We’re going online to choose the best bra designs from businesses and individuals throughout the community and to raise funds for breast cancer support groups.
Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic® presents the BRAs of the Bay event every October to help raise awareness of breast reconstruction rights for breast cancer patients. They’re mandated by the federal Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act.
Breast reconstruction for breast cancer patients must be covered by insurance, even if the reconstruction is delayed until after cancer treatment is completed.
“Breast reconstruction can have profound physical and emotional benefits for patients,” says Dr. Elizabeth O’Connor, a plastic surgeon with Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic. “We know that patients do a lot better if they understand their rights, they understand what reconstruction entails, they know the different options out there and they know that going into the mastectomy.”
In the past five years, BRAs of the Bay has raised almost $64,000 for nonprofit organizations serving those diagnosed with breast cancer.
About the 2020 BRAs of the Bay
This year’s event will be held virtually from Monday, October 19, to Thursday, October 22.
Voting for the custom-decorated bras will take place online on those days. Donations will be collected throughout the week, with event sponsors matching donations on designated days.
The event culminates with a Facebook Live presentation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 22, on the Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists Facebook page, where the winners of the bra-decorating contest will be revealed.
Interested in decorating a bra?
Each business or individual custom-designs a bra and writes a short description of their bra. Designers often incorporate themes or use the bra to honor breast cancer survivors.
There are four winners, one from online voting, and individual favorites chosen by the three BayCare Clinic plastic surgeons – Dr. Steven C. Schmidt, Dr. James Zasuly and O’Connor. Each winner receives a prize and a certificate.
“The bra-decorating contest is just a fun way businesses and individuals in the community can get involved and help raise awareness for the initiative,” O’Connor says. “We’ve really been impressed with the creativity and construction in the past, and it’s something we look forward to each year.”
Who benefits from BRAs of the Bay?
Proceeds from the event benefit the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day USA initiative, and the Ribbon of Hope Foundation, a De Pere-based nonprofit organization committed to being a financial, informational and emotional resource for people with breast cancer in northeastern Wisconsin.
Aurora BayCare Medical Center is a sponsor for this year’s virtual event.
