When people find out I’m a cardiologist, they often ask my advice about staying healthy.
Be active, I tell them.
The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five times a week or least 25 minutes of vigorous exercise at least three times a week. Doing so lowers your risk for heart disease – America’s No. 1 killer – or a stroke.
That may sound challenging. It isn’t. Just get up and get going.
For moderate exercise, go for a walk. Whether walking for a half-hour or walking for 15 minutes twice a day, it provides the same benefit.
Do what you can. If you haven’t been active, set a reachable goal for yourself. Keep at it, setting new goals and going longer as you get stronger.
Vigorous exercise can include jogging. It also includes many kinds of fitness classes.
Whatever you decide to do, it’s great that you’ve decided to be active. I applaud you.
February is American Heart Month. There’s no time like the present to take care of yours.
