6 ways to keep your skin healthy
Tuesday, November 1, 2016
It’s National Healthy Skin Month and Nick Grimm, PA-C, who offers dermatology services with Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic, has six tips on keeping skin looking healthy.
- Use fragrance-free facial cleanser
Gentle fragrance-free cleansers are the best to keep your skin balanced between oily and dry. Using tepid water and microfiber cloths to wash your face can also contribute to balanced skin.
- Avoid long, hot showers
Keeping a certain amount of oil on your skin helps to preserve moisture. Hot water and soap have a tendency to strip oil off your skin. The longer the shower, the more oil is stripped from your skin, causing dryness.
- Use sunscreen year-round
Remembering sunscreen is important even during the winter months. If you wear makeup, tinted sunscreens can serve as a base underneath your makeup. If you are looking for a skincare product that includes sunscreen, check into the Revision® Skincare line that is offered by Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic.
- Take vitamin D and biotin
Everyone should consider taking vitamin D year round, around 2000 iu per day. Skin, hair and nail supplements with biotin in them also are something can aid in skin health.
- Use retinol or retinoids
Everyone can benefit from a retinol or topical retinoid. These help with fine wrinkling and photodamaged skin. Many retinol creams are available over the counter (you can check into our Revision® Skincare line if looking for a retinol cream option). Topical retinoids are prescribed by a medical professional.
- Routinely check your skin
Make sure you are routinely looking over your skin for evidence of skin cancer. Pay special attention to anything that doesn’t heal or continues to bleed. The prominences of the face seem to be the first place that skin cancer is seen: the nose, tops of ears, forehead, cheeks and the scalp.
